Thinking of buying a new kiln but not sure whether to go top-loader or front-loader? 🤔 We’ve broken down the pros and cons of each to help you find the right fit for your studio!

Not all kilns are created equal—and the right one depends on how (and where) you work! Whether you’re a studio potter, hobbyist, or production pro, here’s a quick breakdown to guide your decision:

Standard 860 – Front Loading Kiln

Front-Loading Kilns

✅ Pros:

  • Easier access: Shelves and ware are loaded at standing height—less bending and lifting required.
  • Better visibility: You can see and arrange your work more precisely; ideal for complex stacking.
  • Safer loading: Less chance of bumping or damaging ware when placing items.
  • Ergonomics: Especially suited for larger or heavier pieces and regular use in professional settings.
  • Great for tight spaces: Can be built into walls or placed flush against them.

❌ Cons:

  • Higher cost: Typically more expensive to manufacture and purchase.
  • Requires space in front: The door swings out, needing clearance to open fully.
  • Potential for heat loss: Brief door openings release more heat than top-loaders.

Top-Loading Kilns

✅ Pros:

  • More affordable: Generally less expensive than front-loaders.
  • Efficient heat retention: Lid opens upward, so less direct heat escapes.
  • Compact design: Ideal for home studios or small-scale use with limited floor space.
  • Simpler construction: Fewer moving parts mean fewer maintenance issues.

❌ Cons:

  • Strain on back and arms: Reaching into a hot or deep kiln can be awkward and physically taxing.
  • Visibility issues: Harder to stack precisely; bottom of kiln is less visible during loading.
  • Difficult for larger or fragile items: Lower risk of breakage with front-loaders.
  • Height limitations: Not ideal for very tall users or if the kiln is particularly deep.

Summary:

  • Choose a front-loader if you need ergonomic loading, work with large/heavy pieces, or are running a production studio.

  • Choose a top-loader if budget, space, or simplicity are your main concerns, and your workload is moderate or hobby-based.
